TIPS FOR CHOOSING AN ALF
Choosing an assisted living facility can be a daunting experience unless you are prepared. Here are some tips when considering placing a parent or loved one in an ALF:
Once you have a list of residences to visit, call each one. Consider location, size, and types of services offered.
When visiting an ALF, don’t go alone and try not to make the decisions by yourself. Talk with family members and friends.
Make out a checklist and some written questions for the staff when you visit. As you tour a residence, pay close attention to how you feel and what is going on around you.
Spend time with the facility’s staff and residents. Ask them what they like and dislike about the place.
Visit the ALF more than once. An unscheduled visit on a weekend or in the evening might be helpful in your decision making.
