The Goals of Citrus County Dementia Friendly America:

  • To bring nationwide attention to a disease that is increasing at a staggering rate.
  • To educate our community as to the needs and accommodations necessary for optimum quality of life for families with dementia.
  • Remove the stigma of this disease and help caregivers come forward in need of supportive services.

We are asking for your support in an initiative that will have a positive impact for the seniors living in Citrus County.

According to statistics 1 out of 9 people age 65 and older will be diagnosed with some form of dementia – Alzheimer’s being the major form. Based on these figures and our county’s high population of retirees, our community is particularly at risk, with an estimate of 6,500 people with dementia.

Citrus County Florida is a perfect fit with the objectives of the nationwide Dementia Friendly America initiative.

The Dementia friendly America team presented at the White House Conference on Aging in July 2015. Since then 15 pilot programs at the state, county and city levels have been initiated using the Dementia Friendly blueprint.

The program involves:

  • Garnering community support
  • An assessment period
  • Evaluation of the assessment by DFA
  • And then implementation of DFA recommendations

To date, the Citrus County DFA initiative is the only DFA initiative in Florida. Due to a strong and dedicated core group, we have garnered support at the state level from the Department of Elder Affairs as well as the director of the University of Florida’s Department of Neurology.

Locally we have LETTERS OF SUPPORT FROM ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS the Citrus county Board of County Commissioners, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, the Chamber of Commerce, the Citrus County Chronicle and medical organizations including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and home care agencies. Fortunately, Continuity of Care of Citrus County has pledged its support for the implementation of this initiative and will serve as our supporting organization for this effort.

In order to complete the action items of the program outlined above, DFA estimates a total necessary budget of $15,000. Hence, we have developed a sponsorship package with a goal of raising the required funds.

Please be part of this amazing effort to help those suffering from all forms of dementia and their families in our county. Should you have any questions, please contact Gailen Spinka at (352) 697-2288.
